Apacs Tantrum 300 Review

The second test racket i got my hands on was the UK spec Tantrum 300. I will get straight to the point here... this is the best Apacs racket i have had the pleasure of testing by some way. It is better than the lethal 70, my current racket, and the lethal 90. When i say "better" i mean better for my game, better because it suits my style of play, and better because it helps me play my shots more efficiently, and effectively. The racket makes things easier for me, so i like it, pretty simple really, but very important. I judge any racket by this, and so should you. It often takes quite a few rackets to find one that feels this way, and i am no different. For example, i really liked the superlight i tested last year because it was so good at the net, and for defensive shots. The problem was that it took away a lot of power from the rear court, so what i gained at the front of the court, i lost at the back. If i was a power player, this racket would not have helped me to get the best out of my game. If i was a defensive player who liked to play at the net, then this racket would have probably helped me play the majority of my shots. As with many rackets, there is often a trade off, depending on what type of game you have.

Ok, back to the tantrum 300, here is the spec for it...

Frame Material
30T HM Graphite + Nano (Japan Mitsubishi M30)
Shaft Material 40T HM Graphite + Nano (Japan Toray M40)
Flex Stiff
Weight 3U (86-89g) G2
Length 675mm
Balance 289 ± 3mm (Head Heavy)

Max String Tension
35lbs!

When i tested this racket, the spec said it was "even balance", but i could tell immediately it was "head heavy". I sent an e-mail to Steve at Apacs and he agreed, so the spec on the Apacs Sports UK website now says "head heavy" balance. You may also notice the max stringing tension is at 35lbs. The test racket i had was strung at 28lbs with Apacs string, with no problems at all, so i have no doubt you can go up to 35lbs if you want to break your shoulder! The flex is rated as "stiff", and it is just that.

I put an overgrip on it, so the head heavy balance was not as apparent, but i could still feel it. The first impression was very good indeed. It felt extremely solid, with very little vibration or distortion on impact with the shuttle. The best way to describe the tantrum 300 is that it makes everything easier. It takes less effort to clear and smash, and to generate power. I prefer rackets that make my life easier, the "low work" type of racket i have gone on about in previous posts. The bit of weight in the head helps with control because there is more stability, and the high string tension and stiff frame adds to this effect. The lethal 90 has similar characteristics, but because there is less weight in the head, it is not as stable as the tantrum 300, or the lethal 70 for that matter.

The tantrum 300 is a clear winner for me, it simply comes down to how it suits my own game. It feels "spot on", better than anything i have ever played with, and that includes all of the latest Yonex offerings, such as the Arcsabers and the Nanospeeds. It is better than all of them, by a long way. It also shades the lethal 70 because it has more power and more stability. I honestly didn't think the 70 could be topped, but it has been. As a result, i will be buying this test racket from Apacs Sports, and will be using it for the coming season. I suppose i cannot give it a higher recommendation than that. So, for all of you who liked the lethal 70, the good news is that the tantrum 300 will exceed your expectations, it certainly exceeded mine.

I tested both Tantrum 200 and 300 and I have to say that the T200 is a slightly better racket especially in doubles as it is more towards even balance and quicker at the forecourt.

Hi there

I haven't tested the tantrum 200, so i cannot comment on how it plays, but from your comments it seems it is a pretty good racket.

They both brilliant rackets , I played with many of the high end Yonex rackets (NS9900,9000X, AT900P ,AT 700 etc) and I have to say the T200,T300 are better or on par with them.

The T300 is orientated to a singles racket but it is still quick as lighting and extremely powerful ; the feel and touch is phenomenal just like the T200 I can guarantee that most (intermediate- advance)players would love the T300 and make it their go-to racket ..

Antony , like you said in the review , you have to try the racket to believe it as no words can describe how amazing the racket is

Antony, nice job. I love reading your reviews. I was wondering if it was anyway possible that you could get a hold of Tantrum 200. T200 is much more popular than T300 and lot of people who used that racket claims it is the best ever. I would love to see how it compares with T300

Hi there

I would love to get my hands on the T200! Apacs do not seem to have it here in the UK. I will see if Steve from Apacs can get hold of one so i can review it.

thanks very much for the review

Anthony,
I have a question.
When you say you tested the racket at 28 lbs stringing, does that mean
25/28 lbs or 29/26 lbs (28 lbs average).
I appreciate your answer.

Hi IK

One of my friends strung the racket, so take it as 28lbs average as i do not know what he did exactly. He has a professional stringing machine and i do notice a difference in the way it holds tension for longer.

Anthony,
I got t300 two weeks ago from Apacs Canada. Very good service and excellent stringing.
It feels a solid racket.
They included in the package a replacement grip which I put on the top of existing one.
Measured the balance to be 289 mm,
exactly what you had in the review.
The grip appeared to be very big and uncomfortable so I removed the original grip and wrapped the handle in the replacement grip only.
The replacement grip is extremely well designed.
I measured the balance and it was 300mm, very head heavy.
I play mostly doubles, so I taped a counter weights (a few gramms) at the botton of the handle to get 289mm balance back.
I tried it last week and it worked just fine.
I design a counterweight so that I can adjust the racket balance from 287 to 300mm. The only thing is that the racket weighs a few grams more at the handle.
I am going to try it tonight.
I will keep you updated on my experiment.

Hi IK

Let me know how you get on with the extra weight on the bottom of the handle. I have done this before in one of my ealrier posts on this blog, with lead weight on the very bottom of the handle, and the results were very good indeed.

Hi...for those who have used Tantrum 300 could you please tell if the racket comes pre-strung. If not, then what strings have you guys bought and at what tension.
Thanks,

antony said...

Hi there

It depends on where you buy the racket, as to what string and tension you get. If you buy from apacs sports uk you can specify the string type and the tension. If not it will come with apacs spider string at about 20lbs tension. I use the spider string at about 28-30 lbs tension.

t200 is definitely better in term of feel , still the best racket from Apacs

Hi there,
I have T300 for about a month.
It was strung by apacs.canada at 26/29 with BG80. Excellent stringing and service.
I am intermediate player and it feels very good when I can return a shot from a back line to the other back line every time when I hit a sweet spot without too much effort. Very solid racket.
The only problem I have that I can not get the same shot with my back hand. I have added a counter weight to the bottom of the handle to bring the racket to 290mm balance and to increase the speed and the racket feels heavier. I wish I had 290mm balance without adding the counter weight.
It has a good control and if it were a little lighter and, therefore, faster it would be the ideal racket for me.
I wonder if T200 feels less head heave than T300. I appreciate if anybody knows the answer.
I would also want to know if anybody had an experience with Tantrum Light Power which is supposed to be very light weight
(79g) and head heavy at the same time. That can be very good combination.
I appreciate an experience exchange.
Best Regards,
IK

Would really love to see how the latest Slayer 99 fairs against T300 and Lethal 90.

Hi guys, does anyone know if there is any genuine difference between the "Tantrum 300" and the "Tantrum 300UK"? According to the Apacs UK site, the Tantrum 300UK has a more head heavy balance point (click on "Specs" on the following site):
http://www.apacs-sports.co.uk/catalo...t/prod_39.html#
This is reproduced by a reviewer:
http://badminton-racket.blogspot.com...00-review.html
As you can see, the balance point for the Tantrum 300UK is 289 +/- 3mm, which is different to a standard Tantrum 300 which has a balance point of 285 +/- 5mm. Also, the Apacs UK site states that the Tantrum 300UK has a "Unique UK specification" to it. Does anyone know more about this?

Similarly, there is apparently a "Lethal 70UK", which is presumably different to the "Lethal 70":
http://www.apacs-sports.co.uk/catalo...t/prod_49.html
You'll see that under "Specs", it states "NEW AND IMPROVED 76 gromet system for the UK". What exactly does that mean and does it really make a difference?

Regardless, if the above "Specs" are true, it sounds like the Tantrum 300UK is what I'm after, since I prefer a more head heavy racket. However, the Lethal 70UK sounds pretty much identical to the Lethal 70 to me. Anyway, will be interested to hear people's thoughts.

I just tried the Tantrum 300 for the first time last night. I completely agree with everything in your review, particularly the "makes things easier" part. It's the best racket I've ever used by far. Amazing!

it is easy to manuverau, little bid of head heavy to make the arm sore a bit, but definitely better than armotec 900 technique in term of power or swing speed, and much faster than lethal 50/70 (more power due to faster swing). I put one gram weight at the edge of handle, this give a faster backhand or ball return, and i add 0.5g near the top of shaft, just to slow things down, the things is that the racket is so easy to manuvarau, adding the weight to slow down the speed (at softer swing) in order to do a better quality drop shot..
Two things 1) i wish the handle is even longer, and two if you are smashing and in the middle of the smash you decide to do a drop, because the head is accelerated when the swing had been executed to a certain extend, it is very hard to slow things down, so a less quality net shot, or got caught in the net... but overall very good...and very easy to manuver

I tested this racquet recently and can only agree with your comments regards to its playability.

I have written a full review and will be posting it on my blog soon.

These are just some thoughts, but:

I noticed that the balance on the T300 is 285+/-5mm, which is the same as the T200. Only a guess but I think the T300 and T200 are the same rackets, rebranded for different international markets. Can anyone verify this?

The T300UK, on the other hand, has the balance point more towards the head, making it a seemingly unique racket compared to the T300/T200.

Hello...just wondering, which racket do you guys think is better, L70 or T300? And also, in what ways. Been kind of confused, as anthony said the L70 was better in the comments on L90, but this post says the T300 is better. Furthermore, on badmintoncentral people said L70 is more powerful, but anthony said T300 is more powerful...confused...
(not same anonymous dude as the previous ones in the post)

Hi there

The problem i had with the T300 is that i only tested it for a couple of weeks. The impression i got from using for a short period of time was very good indeed. However, i have played with the L70 for a number of years, so i have got used to that much more than the T300. In reality they are both excellent rackets, by far the best in the Apacs line up that i have tested.

Thank you for the fast reply xD. Anyways, I am finally buying a new racket, from apacs. I have narrowed it down to T300 and L70 with your reviews and those on badmintoncentral. However, I am having a hard time choosing between the two. The sporting good stores close to my home carry only yonex, head, and some other brands that I do not know about. For this reason, I will not be able to try out the racket that I will buy. With this in mind, can you help me make a choice over which racket to buy? I can give you information on my playing style, swing speed, etc. But I also want to know the aspecs of both rackets, i.e their strength and weaknesses. Thank you.

Nevermind. Already bought lethal 70, as the UK spec Tantrum 300 is not available where I live. The balance of the avaible tantrum 300 is 285 +- 5 mm, not as head heavy as the one stated in your post. So, picked Lethal 70. xD
